Kantenah
Overview
Kantenah is a bay on the Riviera Maya between Xpu-Há to the north and Akumal to the south, in Solidaridad municipality, about half an hour by road from both Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Most of its frontage, almost a kilometre of white sand backed by jungle, belongs to the Grand Palladium Riviera Maya complex at Km 256 of Highway 307, which groups the Kantenah, Colonial and Select White Sand hotels and a Family Selection section.
There is no town and no public promenade here; what stands behind the sand is resort property and forest, which is why most visitors are hotel guests. The water is usually calm and clear, with a reef offshore that keeps the swell down and makes snorkelling from the beach practical.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum reaching this coast is carried west across the tropical Atlantic, into the Caribbean, and then north-west along Quintana Roo by the Yucatán Current. Kantenah faces east into that flow like every beach between Tulum and Cancún, so sargassum can arrive here directly.
The reef offshore calms the water but does not keep sargassum out, and Kantenah can be heavily affected, with brown water and sargassum along the shoreline.
The sargassum season
The regional season runs from roughly May to August, with June and July normally the heaviest months and a quiet period from late autumn into spring. the edges of that calendar rather than escaping it, so the difference between a good week and a poor one here is usually a matter of degree.

Swimming conditions and safety
This is one of the easier swims on the Riviera Maya: shallow, calm and shelving gently, with the reef taking the swell. It suits families and inexperienced swimmers, and snorkelling straight off the beach is practical.
Footwear is worth having, since the bottom turns to rock and seagrass in places. Watch for boat traffic from the resorts, and treat a strong onshore wind as a reason to check conditions rather than assume the reef has handled them.
On sargassum: fresh weed in the water is harmless, if unpleasant to swim through. The sulphurous smell some visitors associate with it comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more and is releasing hydrogen sulphide, so a strong smell indicates old weed rather than a fresh arrival.
Choosing a hotel on this stretch
Kantenah is effectively a resort destination, and the choice is which property rather than which neighbourhood. Staying here means depending on the hotel for food, drink and transport, because there is nothing within walking distance; visitors who want restaurants and streets are better placed in Playa del Carmen or Tulum with a day trip out.
The question worth asking any property on this coast during the season is what it does about sargassum on its frontage.

Access and getting there
Kantenah sits directly off Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, reached by resort access roads rather than a public one. Playa del Carmen and Tulum are each about half an hour away by road, and Cancún airport about an hour and a half, according to the resort.
Colectivos, the shared vans running the highway continuously between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, will stop at the Kantenah crucero on request, leaving a walk down the access road. ADO coaches serve Playa del Carmen and Tulum, from where a colectivo completes the trip. Most visitors arrive on a pre-booked transfer.
We do not publish a car park for Kantenah, because there is no verified public lot. Parking is resort property and is arranged through the hotel, so it should be confirmed with the property rather than taken from any page.
