When is sargassum season in the Riviera Maya?

Aerial view of Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte — one of the Mexican Caribbean's clearest-water beaches.
The honest answer: sargassum can now appear at almost any time of year, but it historically followed a fairly predictable seasonal rhythm.
The short version
For the Riviera Maya, (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the coast in between), the heaviest sargassum season typically runs from April or May through to August or September.
If you understand the seasons, you can better plan your trip to maximize your chances of enjoying crystal-clear ocean water instead of ending up by the pool.
Important: every year is different. Seasons have arrived early, peaked late, or surged unexpectedly. Treat the months below as a guide, not a guarantee — and always confirm with the live forecast and beach map close to your trip.
Month by month
December – February · usually the clearest
The calmest stretch. Sargassum is generally at its lowest, the water is often at its bluest, and it overlaps with peak dry-season weather. If a sargassum-free beach is your top priority, this is the safest window.
March – April · the season builds
The first meaningful arrivals usually begin. Early March can still be lovely; by April the rafts tend to increase, especially in exposed, east-facing spots.
May – July · typically the peak
This is when the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt is usually at its largest and currents push the most seaweed onto the coast. Beaches and resorts run active cleanup, but volumes can be high. It can still be a good time to travel but you need to carefully select location if you want to spend time in the ocean. You can consider options like Isla mujeres (Playa Norte) or some parts of Cozumel, which are generally less affected by sargassum. You can also plan a trip to a lagoon like Bacalar.
August – September · easing, but variable
Often the tail of the heavy season. Some years calm down noticeably; others stay busy well into autumn. Conditions can swing week to week.
October – November · the recovery
Things generally trend back toward clear. By late November many beaches are returning to their best.

How to plan around it
- Pick your window if you can. Winter travel maximises your chance of clear water.
- Choose geography wisely. Sheltered bays, west-facing shores, and islands like Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and Holbox often fare better than exposed mainland beaches. The naturally sargassum-free Bacalar lagoon is a different experience entirely.
- Check close to your trip. A forecast in March means little for June. Look again in the days before you go.
- Have a backup beach. Conditions vary hugely over short distances — a flexible plan beats a fixed one.
