How to choose your destination in 2026

The northern coast above Cancún faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres rather than the open Atlantic, which is why it often reads differently from the coast further south on the same day.
With sargassum becoming a much bigger and more persistent issue across the Caribbean, choosing a great resort no longer means you will have a good experience. You can spend five thousand dollars or more on a beautiful property and then discover that the beach in front of it is covered in sargassum, and that the smell of decomposing seaweed makes you want to stay at the pool instead.
The resort itself is the part you can already research with confidence. It is documented in thousands of reviews and it is less likely to surprise anyone. The beach is the variable, and it is the one most itineraries never check.
The principle in one line: choose the beach first, then find the resort that sits on it. Reversing that order is when things are more likely to go wrong.
Conditions vary enormously within a single region
The most common planning error is treating an entire region as a single unit with no variability. Travellers often ask whether the Riviera Maya has sargassum, or whether a specific city is affected this year, and the honest answer is that the question is framed at the wrong scale.
Tulum and the coast north of Puerto Morelos are good examples. Both were among the more heavily affected areas in the Riviera Maya, while some beaches further north around Cancún were swimmable with transparent blue water on the same days. Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres, Playa Langosta, Playa Caracol, Punta Cancún and even Playa Gaviota Azul in northern Cancún have generally been more naturally protected.
Further down the stretch south of Cancún, beaches such as Playa Delfines are more likely to see variability, since they face the open sea and stronger currents. The difference can be significant even within the same region, and the drive between two completely different experiences can be less than twenty minutes.
The variation operates at a far smaller scale than most travellers expect. Two beaches several hundred metres apart can read very differently on the same morning, because wind and current determine which stretch receives a mat and which is spared. Orientation, reef position, headlands and containment barriers all contribute to how much sargassum a given beach actually receives. No regional summary, however well intentioned, can capture that resolution, and that is why Sargazo Watch was created.
A three-step method
The approach that works is sequential, and the order matters.
1. Verify the current conditions
Begin with evidence rather than reputation. Examine recent photographs, live cameras and aerial footage from the specific beaches under consideration, and treat anything more than a week old with caution. You can also compare the current conditions against older photographs on the same beach card, which shows how that particular stretch behaves when sargassum arrives. The aerial footage and the satellite imagery supply information that cannot be seen from the ground, such as how much sargassum is actually moving towards the shoreline and how the wider coast is reading.
2. Select the beach
Once you can estimate how much sargassum a beach is likely to receive, and compare it alongside its neighbours, you can narrow the hotel search to a specific stretch. Look for consistency across several days rather than a single flattering photograph, and note how the surrounding beaches are reading, since a genuinely sheltered pocket tends to hold its condition while the exposed stretches nearby do not. 3. Then choose the resort
Only at this point does the hotel research begin, and every ordinary consideration still applies: price, board basis, adults-only or family, restaurants and reviews. Reading the evidence accurately
Not every observation carries equal weight, and three distinctions are worth understanding before interpreting what the imagery shows.
Offshore density is not the same as what reaches the sand. Satellite imagery of the Atlantic belt records where floating sargassum sits, sometimes in very large quantities, but a dense band a kilometre out may never come ashore, and a clear horizon offers no assurance that the shoreline is clean. Both readings are informative, which is why our forecast page accompanies the beach-level photographs rather than substituting for them.
Discoloured water and shoreline deposit are separate problems. A beach may show brown water with almost nothing on the sand, which is unappealing for swimming but might produce less odour and generally clears within days. The reverse situation is also possible: clear water alongside a thick band of decomposing sargassum on the sand produces the undesirable smell, while the water a few steps away remains swimmable. Some photographs are taken before the daily hotel clean-up, so asking a resort whether it clears the shoreline every day is worth doing. When assessing a photograph, examine how much sargassum has been deposited on the sand, but also look at the water itself, the colour and how transparent it is.
A single photograph records a moment, not a pattern. Any beach can appear immaculate for the ten minutes following a cleaning crew. Several dated photographs across different days are far more informative. Look for trends, and compare against other beaches.
Why the destination alone no longer answers the question
Sargassum still follows a certain seasonal trajectory, peaking in June and July, but it is no longer as reliable or as predictable as it used to be. Our seasonal guide covers that subject in more detail.
A resort's own photography is a poor guide: those images are selected rather than dated, they are almost invariably taken on the best day of the year, sometimes years earlier, and they are often heavily retouched.
Nothing would be worse than finding an amazing all-inclusive, spending thousands on the trip, and then discovering that the beach is unusable and that the week will be spent at the pool. None of this requires abandoning a destination you love. Often it simply requires putting some work into researching the right beach first, verifying it against dated evidence, and choosing the accommodation afterwards.
