Naples Beach

Overview

Naples sits on the Gulf coast in Collier County, at the southern end of Florida's south-west shore. Its beach runs along the city's western edge, backed by manicured streets and low-rise residential frontage rather than by towers, with the historic Naples Pier at its centre. The pier, first built in 1888, was largely destroyed by Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and has been closed since; a full rebuild began in January 2026, with reopening targeted for around 2027. The beach beside it remains open.

The atmosphere is affluent and unhurried. Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South, a few blocks inland, hold the galleries and restaurants the city is known for, and the beach itself is quiet by Florida standards even in season.

The sand is fine and pale, the water calm and shallow, and the sunsets are the local event, watched from the beach around the pier.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt

The sargassum that affects Florida is carried north through the Florida Straits in the Florida Current, which becomes the Gulf Stream along the state's Atlantic coast, and in most years only small amounts reach the beaches of the Gulf coast.

Anyone choosing between Florida coasts in summer should compare both on the live map rather than assume they behave alike.

The sargassum season

On this shore the seasonal variable that most often affects a visit is red tide, a bloom of the alga Karenia brevis that occurs naturally in the Gulf, most often in late summer and autumn. It is unrelated to sargassum, it does not look like weed on the sand, and it is worth checking locally before travelling in those months.

Swimming conditions and safety

This is easy swimming: fine sand, a gradual shelf, little surf and warm water. It suits families and weak swimmers, and the shallows extend a long way out.

Two cautions apply. Rip currents are uncommon, and the area around the pier is a construction site during the rebuild, and in a red-tide year the respiratory irritation is carried onshore by the wind, which is worth checking locally in late summer and autumn.

On sargassum, for completeness: fresh weed in the water is harmless, and the sulphurous smell associated with it comes from material decomposing on hot sand over a day or more. Neither is a common experience on this coast.

Choosing a hotel on this stretch

Naples has a small number of beachfront resorts and a larger stock of hotels and rentals a few blocks inland, most within walking distance of the beach and the downtown streets. It is expensive by Florida standards and correspondingly quiet.

The choice is between staying on the sand, which is limited and costly, and staying near Fifth Avenue South, which puts the restaurants and galleries on foot and the beach a short walk or ride away. Marco Island to the south and Vanderbilt Beach to the north are the alternatives.

Visitors weighing this coast against the Atlantic side for a summer visit should note that our Gulf scores are consistently higher through the sargassum season. The trade is Gulf water rather than Atlantic surf, and the possibility of a red-tide bloom in late summer.

Without a car, Collier Area Transit serves Naples and the surrounding county, though service is limited compared with the east coast. Southwest Florida International Airport at Fort Myers serves the area, and Naples has its own smaller airport.
