Punta Mosquito
Overview
Punta Mosquito is a long sandbar reaching off the eastern tip of Isla Holbox, roughly 2.5 kilometres from the town along the beach. It sits inside the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, and it is the most photographed spot on an island already known for its light and its shallows.
Getting there is part of what it is. The walk from town runs along the shore, and the final approach crosses knee-deep flats that are wadeable at low tide and considerably less so at high. There is nothing at the point itself: no shade, no facilities, no vendors.
The reward is a spit of pale sand surrounded by very shallow turquoise water, with flamingos and wading birds on the lagoon side and open Gulf on the other. It is a place to walk to rather than to spend a day at.

Readings on Holbox are among the strongest anywhere we track, and that is a matter of where the island sits rather than of how it is maintained.
Dark patches in these shallows are commonly seagrass or the island's own drifting organic matter rather than sargassum. Our score reflects sargassum specifically, and on this coast the distinction matters more than it does on the Caribbean side.
Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
The sargassum that affects the Mexican Caribbean travels west across the tropical Atlantic, enters the Caribbean Sea, and is carried north-west up the coast of Quintana Roo by the Yucatán Current before turning into the Gulf of Mexico through the Yucatán Channel. That route runs along the eastern, Caribbean-facing side of the peninsula.
Holbox is on the northern, Gulf-facing side, beyond the corner of the peninsula. Material heading north through the channel passes well offshore of the island and continues into the open Gulf. This is a difference of position rather than of degree, which is why Holbox and the Cancún coast can be in completely different conditions in the same week.
Punta Mosquito adds its own protection. It is a shallow sandbar surrounded by flats, and very shallow water with sandbars offshore is a poor environment for large floating rafts to reach a shore intact. The prevailing onshore breeze that makes the island good for kitesurfing also breaks up what little arrives.
None of this makes the point immune to marine debris, and after storms the lagoon behind the island pushes material out onto the flats. That is not Atlantic sargassum, and the two should not be read as the same thing in a photograph.
The sargassum season
The Caribbean season runs from roughly May to August, peaking in June and July. Holbox sits outside its main path, so the practical consequence is that this island is the region's most dependable option during exactly the months when the Riviera Maya is at its worst.

Swimming conditions and safety
The water here is shallow enough to wade a very long way out, with almost no surf on a normal day, which makes it forgiving but unsatisfying for anyone wanting to swim lengths.
The real considerations are the walk and the tide. The crossing to the point is straightforward at low water and harder as the tide comes in, so check the state of the tide before setting out and allow for the return. There is no shade anywhere along the route and no water to buy, which matters more here than the sea state.
Mosquitoes and sand flies are abundant at dawn and dusk, as the point's name suggests. The sandbar is also a nesting and feeding area for birds, so keep to the sand and away from marked areas.
On sargassum: fresh weed in the water is harmless, if unpleasant to swim through. The sulphurous smell some visitors associate with it comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more and is releasing hydrogen sulphide, so a strong smell indicates old weed rather than a fresh arrival.
Choosing a hotel on this stretch
Nobody stays at Punta Mosquito; the question is where to stay on Holbox. Accommodation is small hotels and guesthouses rather than resorts, concentrated in the town and spread east along the beach toward the point.
Staying east of town shortens the walk here considerably and puts you on quieter sand, at the cost of a golf-cart ride to dinner. The town itself is walkable for restaurants and the plaza. Punta Cocos at the western end is the sunset side and the quietest of the three.
For visitors weighing Holbox against the Riviera Maya during the season, the honest comparison is that Holbox trades Caribbean water and snorkelling for near-certain absence of sargassum, plus a longer journey.
Access and getting there
Holbox is not connected to the mainland by road. Access is by passenger ferry from Chiquilá, about two hours by road from Cancún, with a crossing of roughly 25 minutes. ADO coaches serve Chiquilá from Cancún and Mérida.
From the town, Punta Mosquito is reached on foot along the beach, around 2.5 kilometres east, or by golf-cart taxi as far as the tracks allow. The final stretch is a wade. Cars stay on the mainland at Chiquilá, where privately operated lots serve the ferry.
We do not publish a car park for Punta Mosquito, because there is no lot on the island at all; the parking that matters is in Chiquilá, and those are private operations whose terms are best confirmed on the day.
