Getting there
Cofresí is around ten minutes west of Puerto Plata by road, with transfers included in many packages and taxis readily available from Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete.
Book any encounter well in advance; slots are capped and sell out on cruise days.
How to make the most of the day
- 1Decide on encounters before you book. Adding them at the gate is more expensive and often unavailable.
- 2Do not turn up on a Monday. The park is closed, which catches out independent visitors.
- 3Avoid cruise-ship days. Reviewers who visited with no ship in port describe an almost private park.
- 4Arrive at opening. The shows run on a fixed schedule and the first is the least crowded.
- 5Consider the alternatives if captivity concerns you. Whale watching at Samaná and the reef trips are wild-animal options.
- 6Budget for the photographs, or accept you will have none. Cameras are banned in the water at the encounters and the official images are sold separately.

Cofresí developed around the marine park and the marina, and the complex is one of the largest single employers on this stretch of the north coast. Its dolphin programme has been operating since the mid-2000s and remains the principal reason most visitors buy a ticket.
