National park · Samaná Bay

Limestone mogotes on the southern shore of Samaná Bay, the signature landscape of the park.
The landscape is the attraction: hundreds of steep limestone knolls, remnants of an eroded plateau, standing in shallow water and covered in forest. The boat threads between them and into mangrove channels where the water is still and the canopy closes overhead.
The cave stops add the human layer. The pictographs are genuine Taíno work, drawn in charcoal and mineral pigment, and the guides explain their context. Access involves short walks on wet, uneven rock.
Most operators sell the park together with Cayo Levantado, and the two make a natural pair: a morning threading the mangroves and caves, then an afternoon on the island's beach. They are entirely different experiences, and the park is the one worth the early start.
Highly rated as the most scenic boat trip in the country, with the criticism aimed at travel time and rushed itineraries.
Drawn from the recurring themes in public visitor reviews of the activity and the tours that reach it. We do not reproduce individual reviews or aggregate scores; for current ratings, check Viator or another booking platform directly.
Boats leave from the Caño Hondo pier at Sabana de la Mar and from Samaná town, and most sail between 8 and 9am to catch the calmest water. Samaná to Sabana de la Mar is 90 minutes by road or 45 minutes across the bay; Las Terrenas is 75 minutes by road.
Staying in Samaná or Las Terrenas reduces the day to a comfortable half day.
Los Haitises means highland or hill country in Taíno, and the park protects roughly 98 square kilometres of mangrove alongside one of the last remaining rainforests in the country, used as a filming location for Jurassic Park. Its caves were used by the Taíno for shelter and ceremony, and hold one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the Dominican Republic.
