A protected island off the southeast coast within Cotubanamá National Park, Saona is the country's most popular day-trip, reached by catamaran and speedboat from Bayahibe.
Famous for postcard palm-lined white sand, shallow natural pools and starfish flats, it is uninhabited except for small villages and has no large development.
