Pompano Beach
Overview
Pompano Beach sits on the Atlantic in Broward County, between Fort Lauderdale to the south and Deerfield Beach to the north. Its centre is the fishing pier, and the beachfront around it was rebuilt over the past decade into a promenade of restaurants, a plaza and a parking garage set directly behind the sand.
The beach itself is wide and pale, with a gentle shelf and moderate Atlantic surf. It is quieter than Fort Lauderdale and less built up than the towers to the south, and the crowd is largely local, which gives the beachfront a residential rather than resort character.
Access is free along the whole stretch, with lifeguard towers spaced along the municipal section and open sand continuing well north and south of the pier.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Pompano sits at the outer edge of the sargassum system rather than within it. The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt forms between West Africa and Brazil and travels west into the Caribbean; southeast Florida receives only the fraction that survives that passage and is then carried north by the Florida Current, the flow that becomes the Gulf Stream.
Volumes here are consequently far lower than in the Mexican Caribbean or on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, which face the belt head on. Because that material arrives as scattered rafts rather than a continuous mass, landfall is decided by the wind on the day: an easterly pushes it ashore, a westerly holds it offshore.
The local variable is the pier. A structure of that length interrupts the longshore drift that carries sand and floating material along the shore, so weed tends to collect against one side and pass the other, depending on the day's wind and current. This is the same effect seen at Playa del Carmen's ferry pier, and it is why the north and south sides of Pompano's pier are worth judging separately rather than as one beach.
The sargassum season
The window that concerns Broward County runs from roughly April to August, and within it wind direction decides individual days rather than the calendar. That is why our record for this coast shows clear and affected days alternating rather than following a curve.

Swimming conditions and safety
This is an open Atlantic beach with a gentle shelf and generally moderate surf, comparable to Fort Lauderdale and calmer than Florida's central coast. Rip currents are the principal hazard rather than wave height, and they form most readily on windy days and around structures, which here means near the pier.
The municipal beach is lifeguarded and flies the standard warning flags. Purple indicates marine pests rather than sargassum, usually jellyfish or Portuguese man o' war, which arrive on the same onshore winds that carry the weed.
Keep clear of the pier itself while swimming: fishing lines run from it, and the currents around the pilings are stronger than on the open beach.
On sargassum: fresh weed floating in the water is harmless and merely unpleasant. The sulphurous smell comes from material that has decomposed on hot sand for a day or more, releasing hydrogen sulphide. If a stretch smells strongly, the weed is old, and walking to the other side of the pier is often more effective than waiting.

The garage sits directly beside the pier and the beachfront, and it is the most convenient option for the central beach. Parking is paid at the machines or by app, and metered spaces also line Pompano Beach Boulevard. Expect it to fill at weekends and during pier events.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is roughly twenty-five minutes south. A1A runs the length of the coast and connects Pompano to Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Deerfield without joining the interstate.
The pier
The Pompano Beach Fishing Pier is the landmark and the anchor of the redeveloped beachfront. It is open for walking as well as fishing, and it is the best vantage point on this stretch for judging the water: from partway along you can see the colour of the water on both sides and whether a weed line is running.
The plaza behind it holds restaurants and cafés facing the sand, which makes this an easier beach than most for a full day.
