Playa Ancha, Cancún
Overview
Playa Ancha is a beach at Kilometre 7.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, in front of the Presidente InterContinental, on the stretch of coast between Playa Tortugas and Punta Cancún. Its name means "wide beach" in Spanish. It lies on the northern arm of the Hotel Zone, which faces Bahía de Mujeres and Isla Mujeres rather than the open Caribbean.
The beach is quieter than the public beaches nearby. There are no beach clubs or vendors of its own, and most of the people on the sand are guests of the hotels behind it.

Playa Ancha faces the bay rather than the open sea, so its photographs are a useful comparison with Gaviota Azul and the beaches of the long eastern stretch on the same day.
Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum reaching Cancún is carried north by the Yucatán Current and pushed ashore by the easterly wind. The long eastern stretch of the Hotel Zone, from Punta Cancún south to Punta Nizuc, faces that wind directly and usually receives the most. The bay side, where Playa Ancha lies, is more sheltered and generally receives less. It is not immune: Gaviota Azul, at the corner of Punta Cancún less than two kilometres away, received very heavy arrivals in September and October 2026, so conditions should be checked on the day.
The sargassum season
The regional season runs from roughly May to August, with the heaviest arrivals usually in June and July, and the coast is generally quieter from late autumn into spring. The wider picture is set out in our Riviera Maya sargassum season guide.
Swimming conditions and safety
The water on the bay side is usually calm, with small waves and a sandy bottom, which makes Playa Ancha one of the easier beaches in the Hotel Zone for swimming. Conditions change with the wind, and the beach flags should be checked before entering the water.
Choosing where to stay
The Presidente InterContinental stands directly behind the beach, and other hotels on the northern arm of the Hotel Zone are within walking distance along the sand. Visitors who want calm water close to the shopping and restaurants around Punta Cancún often choose this stretch for that reason.
Access and getting there
Beaches in Mexico are federal land and open to the public along the sand, but we have not confirmed a dedicated public access point at Playa Ancha itself. The most practical route for visitors not staying at the hotels is to arrive at Playa Tortugas, which has public access from Boulevard Kukulcán, and walk east along the shore. Hotel Zone buses run along Boulevard Kukulcán past the hotels.
