Overview
Playa Paraíso is the beach in front of the Iberostar complex at Highway 307 Km 309, on the stretch of coast between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. Five Iberostar hotels share it, from family resorts to the adults-only JOIA Paraíso, so the frontage runs for some distance and its character changes along it.
What sits offshore is the reason to consider this stretch at all. It fronts the Parque Nacional Arrecife de Puerto Morelos, the protected section of the Mesoamerican reef, and Iberostar runs a coral nursery at the complex. The reef keeps the water inside it noticeably calmer than the open coast to the south.
It is a resort beach, not a public one. There is no free access, no public car park and no walk-in entry: visitors are guests of one of the hotels, or buy a day pass.

Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
This part of the coast has a genuine barrier reef lying close inshore, which is the structural difference between here and Playa del Carmen twenty minutes south, where no such barrier exists. The reef breaks the swell and stops much of the floating sargassum before it reaches the sand.
That protection cuts both ways, and it is worth understanding before booking on the strength of it. Weed that does clear the reef enters a sheltered lagoon with little wave energy to carry it back out, so it can sit against the shore rather than washing clear. A calm lagoon is easier to swim in and slower to flush.
Clearing the sand changes what a guest sees rather than what arrives. Cleared sand in the morning is not evidence of clear water, so judge the water rather than the beach.
The sargassum season
The Caribbean sargassum season runs broadly from spring into late summer, at its heaviest between April and August and easing through the autumn. What reaches a particular beach on a given day depends on the wind and current beforehand rather than on the month alone.
For a managed frontage of this size, the season determines the scale of the clearing effort rather than whether it happens. In a heavy week the difference between this beach and an unmaintained public access is considerable; in a settled week there is little to choose between them.
Anyone booking here specifically for the reef and the snorkelling should be aware that a heavy influx affects visibility as much as it affects the sand, and clearing the sand does not change that. The regional pattern is set out in our guide to sargassum season in the Riviera Maya.
Choosing a hotel on this stretch
The five Iberostar hotels here differ mainly in who they are for rather than where they sit: two Waves family resorts (Paraíso Beach and Paraíso del Mar), two Selection family resorts (Paraíso Lindo and Paraíso Maya Suites) and the adults-only JOIA Paraíso. Access to the other hotels depends on which one a guest is booked into.
Two things are worth confirming before booking, since they vary along a frontage this long: how far the room block is from the sand, and how the property handles sargassum in peak season.
For anyone who wants the same reef without a resort, Puerto Morelos village to the north has public beach access and a working town behind it, and the snorkelling trips leave from there.
Access and getting there
The complex is entered from Highway 307 at Km 309, between Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. Airport transfers are the usual arrangement, and parking is available on site for guests.
There is no public access to this beach and no visitor parking. Day passes are sold by the hotels, which is the only route in for anyone not staying. The nearest free public accesses are in Puerto Morelos village to the north and Punta Esmeralda in northern Playa del Carmen to the south.
A taxi or a pre-arranged transfer is the alternative to driving. The colectivos running along Highway 307 will drop passengers at the junction, but the resorts are a long way in from the road.
