Luquillo Beach, Puerto Rico
Overview
Luquillo Beach, officially Balneario La Monserrate, is the public bathing beach of Luquillo, on the north-east coast of Puerto Rico, just off Route 3 and close to El Yunque National Forest. It is a crescent of sand of about a mile, lined with coconut palms, with the mountains of El Yunque visible behind it.
As an official balneario, it has lifeguards during opening hours, restrooms, showers and a large car park, with a fee per vehicle. Vendors sell food and drinks, and kayaks and other equipment can be rented. Towards the east end, the Mar Sin Barreras area allows people with disabilities to enter the water with adapted wheelchairs and floats.

Luquillo lies on the north-east coast, so its photographs are a useful comparison with San Juan to the west and Culebra to the east on the same day.
Position relative to the Atlantic sargassum belt
Sargassum from the tropical Atlantic reaches Puerto Rico in most recent years, carried by the trade winds and currents, and the amount that lands on a given beach depends largely on its exposure and on the wind on the day. Luquillo faces the open Atlantic, but the reef in front of the beach breaks the swell and keeps the water calm. The dated photographs above show the beach as it actually was.
The sargassum season
In Puerto Rico the heaviest arrivals usually fall between spring and late summer, and the winter months are generally quieter. Volumes and timing vary considerably from one year to the next, so recent photographs are a better guide than the calendar.
The Luquillo kiosks
A long row of food kiosks, the Kioskos de Luquillo, stands along Route 3 beside the balneario. They serve local dishes such as alcapurrias and pinchos alongside shops for beachwear and crafts, and many tours to El Yunque stop there.
Swimming conditions and safety
The reef shelters the main swimming area, and the water is usually calm and suitable for children. Rip currents are rare but can form after storms. Lifeguards cover the main beach near the entrance, so swimmers further along the sand do so at their own risk, and the flags should be checked before entering the water.
Access and getting there
From San Juan, the beach is reached by Route 66 and then Route 3 east, past the turn-off for El Yunque, taking the exit marked Balneario after the row of kiosks. The drive takes under an hour in normal traffic. When the car park is full, visitors can park at the kiosks and walk along the beach.
